IPC MSI MS-98H3: Industrial computer as a home lab

I have been looking for a long time for a suitable solution in order to choose a platform to build a home router. The device I was looking for had to:

  • be small so that it can fit in a technical cabinet in the hallway of the apartment,
  • be equipped with an Intel processor with AES and support virtualization,
  • be equipped with two 1 GbE network cards,
  • support disks mSATA i SATA.

Some time ago I found the “opportunity” at olx.pl and I managed to buy the title computer that perfectly suited my requirements. Below I present the specification of my computer:

MS-98H3

3.5″ SBC with Intel® Kaby Lake-U/Skylake-U for Fanless, Ultra Low-Power & High-Performance Solution

  • Intel® 7th Gen i3-7100U CPU @ 2.40GHz
  • DDR4 2133 MHz SODIMM 8GB (up to 16GB)
  • 2 GbE LAN with RJ-45
  • 1 Mini-PCIe (Full size, with mSATA), 1 Mini-PCIe (Full size, with Nano SIM Holder) Slots
  • 2 SATA 3.0, Micro SD for storage SATA RAID 0/1
  • 4 USB 3.2 Gen 1, 4 USB 2.0, 6 COM(1 RS-485), GPIO, Audio
  • Wide Voltage DC-IN 12~24V

According to the initial assumptions for the project, the Hyper-V Server 2019 system was to be run on the device, with Sophos XG Firewall Home Edition running as a virtual machine to manage the home network. Plus, I wanted to be able to run additional virtual machines. As can be seen from the above specification, the MS-98H3 fits into these assumptions and the posts in the MSI MS-98H3 category are created using this industrial computer.
